Though the Dumpling Station truck (@dumplingstation) was the only Asian-inspired mobile eatery at last Saturday’s Pasadena Dumpling Festival (the other truck in attendance was QZilla BBQ), the laid-back fest was still well worth checking out not only for the eating contest, but for the Station’s amazing cream cheese & jalapeño wontons and free admission into the Pacific Asia Museum (normally $9 for adults, $7 for students & seniors and free for members).
As is the custom with L.A.’s growing gourmet food truck scene, a hungry line formed for the Dumpling Station…Lucky for us, we arrived at the museum an hour early and took the opportunity to try the Station’s food before the crowd formed. As fortune would have it, it was a good thing we ate before watching the six eating competition contestants scarf down 50 chicken dumplings in less than two minutes. Save for Ben, the contestant who was entered into the contest unbeknownst to him by a friend, the rest of the competitors didn’t leave anything remotely edible when it was all over in one minute and 40 seconds. The winner, Greg, was awarded a $50 Visa gift card, a free museum membership and T-shirt and most of all, a full stomach.
